During his visit to Ohio Wesleyan, Prof. Farrell will give a public lecture, meet with classes, hold a special session on the use of technology in teaching, and meet informally with faculty and students.
Prof. Farrell’s public lecture will be on Thursday evening, 9 February. The special session for technology in teaching will be late Thursday afternoon. (See below for links to his Web sites.)
Joseph Farrell’s special interests are in Latin literature and Roman culture and society. His current projects include a study of the mutually defining relationship between antiquity and modernity, as well as research on Latin poets, especially Vergil and Ovid. He has written Latin Language and Latin Culture from Ancient to Modern Times and Vergil’s Georgics and the Traditions of Ancient Epic, and is currently at work on a book titled Juno’s Aeneid: Metapoetics, Narrativity, Dissent. He is former editor of Vergilius.
Professor Farrell is associate dean for arts and letters and professor of classical studies at Penn, where he joined the faculty in 1985. From 1998 to 2003 he was the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Term Professor in Humanities. In 1995 he founded the Vergil Project to study ways to create interactive tools for the learning, teaching, and research of classics via the Internet. Recent named lectures include the Trinity College Classical Society Lecture, Trinity College Dublin, and the Stocker Lecture, University of Virginia.
