‘Women in the Club’ Author to Speak March 20 at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – Michele L. Swers, author of “Women in the Club: Gender and Policy Making in the Senate,” will share insights on the impact of women in politics when she speaks March 20 at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Swers, Ph.D., an associate professor of American government at Georgetown University, will speak at 7:30 p.m. March 20 in Benes Room B of Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Her presentation is part of the annual Benjamin F. Marsh Lecture Series on Public Affairs.
Swers has provided expertise on congressional policymaking, elections, and the role of women in politics to media outlets including The Washington Post, CNN, C-SPAN, PBS NewsHour, CQ Weekly, and Politico.
In addition to “Women in the Club,” published in 2013, Swers also is the author of “The Difference Women Make: The Policy Impact of Women in Congress (2002),” which explores gender differences in policy-making activity on issues related to women, children, and families. She is a co-author of the textbook “Women and Politics: Paths to Power and Political Influence (2010),” written with Julie Dolan and Melissa Deckman. Swers earned her doctorate in political science from Harvard University.
After Swers speaks, Ohio Wesleyan professor Joan McLean, Ph.D., will moderate a discussion on women in politics. McLean, who joined the OWU faculty in 1990, has worked on two presidential campaigns and helped to shape Geraldine Ferraro’s nomination strategy and bid for the vice presidency in 1984.
Swers’ presentation is part of the university’s Benjamin F. Marsh Lecture Series on Public Affairs, first held in 2001. The series, coordinated by Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Politics and Government, is endowed by Marsh, a 1950 OWU graduate and attorney in Maumee, Ohio. Marsh has held numerous political posts at local, state, and national levels, and previously served as registration supervisor and adjudicator for the U.S. Department of State to the Organization and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and as an election supervisor in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
