Washington Monthly Ranks Ohio Wesleyan Among Top Liberal Arts Colleges

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University is ranked among the top 50 liberal arts colleges and universities in the United States for its “contribution to the public good,” according to Washington Monthly’s 2014 College Rankings. OWU is one of only two Ohio schools listed among the top 50 liberal arts colleges.
According to the magazine, Ohio Wesleyan’s No. 49 ranking is based on outcomes in three categories:
Social Mobility – recruiting and graduating low-income students. Research – producing cutting-edge scholarship and students who go on to earn doctoral degrees. Service – encouraging students to give something back to their country.
“We all benefit when colleges produce groundbreaking research that drives economic growth, when they put students from lower-income families on the path to a better life, and when they shape the character of future leaders,” Washington Monthly’s editors stated in announcing the new rankings.
Featured in the magazine’s September/October edition, the rankings include 246 schools in the liberal arts category. Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin College are the only Ohio-based schools listed in the top 50.
In addition to being recognized by Washington Monthly for its contribution to the public good, Ohio Wesleyan also is one of only 40 U.S. higher education institutions featured in every edition of the highly regarded guidebook “Colleges That Change Lives.”
According to the 2013-2014 edition of the guidebook: “The character development that accompanies intellectual growth is exceptional. Few places pay so much attention to the whole person. Egos are small here, and hearts are big.”
