U.S. Needs New Global Military Strategy, Ohio Wesleyan Expert Says

DELAWARE, Ohio – U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel needs to work with Washington, D.C., policymakers to create a new military strategy, says Ohio Wesleyan University professor Sean Kay, Ph.D.
Kay was interviewed about Hagel’s new role by Bloomberg News. For the article, he told writers Gopal Ratnam and Laura Litvan that “instead of letting his tenure as Pentagon chief become a running fight with lawmakers over defense dollars, Hagel should outline a strategy for the U.S. military’s role in the world.
“In the end,” Kay concluded, “America needs a new strategy for defense, and the degree to which Secretary of Defense Hagel can get the bureaucracy and the Congress to buy into that – when so much vested interest lies in the status quo – will be a serious first-year and an ongoing challenge.”

Kay is a politics and government professor and director of international studies at Ohio Wesleyan, a Mershon Associate at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies at The Ohio State University, and a fellow in foreign policy and national security at the Eisenhower Institute in Washington, D.C.
