Travel-Learning Course, ‘Island Biology’
Learn how OWU’s many academic, research, and travel-learning programs prepare students for leadership and global citizenship and help them … Make the Connection.
Name: Lili Fikter ’16
Majors: General Zoology, General Geology, and Environmental Studies
Hometown: Chagrin Falls, Ohio
Experience: Travel-Learning Course, “Island Biology”
For two weeks in May, Fikter and classmates traveled to the Galápagos Islands and Ecuador with zoology faculty Shala Hankison, Ph.D., and John Gatz, Ph.D., to walk in the footsteps of Charles Darwin at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lessons Learned: “My experience in my Travel-Learning Course was incredibly rewarding. It was really exciting to actually see all the plants and animals we spent the entire semester talking about. I think that this really brought together what we were talking about and makes it more memorable than just sitting in the classroom. Not many people can say that they got to spend a week traveling around the Galápagos Islands as part of a class.
I chose to come to OWU because of all of the different opportunities the school offers. … Of all the schools I was looking at, OWU offered the most unique and diverse range of opportunities for me to apply my education beyond the classroom.”
