As this weekend’s first night game at Selby Field approaches, students and faculty at Ohio Wesleyan are preparing to celebrate.
Meggie Feran ’06, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, says she expects a “great crowd” to be at the game.
“Not only will faculty, staff, student groups, student-athletes and alumni be gathering, but the Marketing and Communication department has done a great job in promoting it to the Delaware community, too,” she says. “There are posters and table tents posted throughout downtown Delaware, and I believe PSAs are being done on local radio stations on game day.”
Chartwells catering is offering a pregame meal at the tailgate for five food points. People Regarding Individual Diversity Everywhere (PRIDE) will be selling desserts, and other groups will be gathered to celebrate before the game.
Sharif Kronemer ’12, vice-president of the Wesleyan Council on Student Affairs (WCSA), says there is also a service aspect to the game. WCSA, the Ohio Wesleyan Athletic Council (OWAC), the Night Game committee and Horizons International are working to raise funds and food for Pakistan flood relief.
“All this week, cans are being donated and collected in a competition against Wooster,” Kronemer says.
The athletic director at the school that loses will have to wear spirit wear from the other school at the OWU-Wooster basketball game.
Football coach Mike Hollway says the atmosphere during the game should be exciting, as his team considers the Fighting Scots heavy competition.
“Wooster has evolved into a rivalry game over the last decade and the fact that it is a night game increases the excitement for the contest,” he said.
The Delaware Hayes High School marching band will also perform during halftime, and Kronemer says he hopes families and others from the Delaware community will be at the game.
In addition, t-shirts will be given to the first 300 OWU students, an iPad will be given away, the dorm with the most representatives will be given free pizza, and the new Battling Bishop mascot costume will be unveiled.
Feran says the school and community are ready for a great night.
“The buzz is building and I know the game is going capture the essence of a crisp, fall night—perfect for a Bishops’ football win, a community-college gathering and a memory not soon forgotten.”
