Survey: Ohio Wesleyan Among Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs
DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University is among the top “30+ Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs” in the United States and Canada, according to a list released today by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine. Schools were selected for the list based on their efforts in the areas of workplace diversity, staffing practices, family friendliness, work-life practices, professional-development opportunities, and salary/benefits.
Diverse magazine partnered with the American College Personnel Association and the Center for Inclusion, Diversity & Academic Success (IDEAS) at The Ohio State University to produce the survey. The final list, issued in alphabetical order, is included in the March 27 edition of Diverse, a biweekly publication devoted to matters of access and equity throughout higher education.
“We’ve been looking at diversity recruitment efforts for years, and we know who has been doing a great job at promoting diversity,” said Ralph Newell, Diverse magazine’s vice president of business development and technology. “This takes the next step so we can see who is doing the best job once diverse talent gets on campus in the student affairs segment.”
Craig Ullom, Ed.D., vice president for Ohio Wesleyan’s Division of Student Affairs, said the division is committed to embracing diversity and pleased to be recognized for its efforts.
“Connecting with diverse individuals is essential to developing empathy and learning different ways of knowing and living,” said Ullom, who joined Ohio Wesleyan in 2008 to oversee an area that includes the offices of the dean of students, career services, multicultural student affairs, residential life, student involvement, and more.
“We are uniquely positioned in student affairs to assist and support students as they engage with others who challenge them to think more completely about differences and commonalities that we share,” Ullom said. “By doing so, students are more likely to develop holistically as young adults who will apply their learning in college to the larger world in which they live and work.”
