Strand Theatre Honored Among ‘Best of Ohio’

Now here’s something that deserves to be in the spotlight – or in this case on the movie marquee: Delaware’s Strand Theatre has earned a spot on Ohio Magazine’s newest “Best of Ohio” list.
The Strand, 28 E. Winter St., is named the Buckeye State’s best community movie house in Ohio Magazine’s January edition. The non-profit theatre also is the nucleus of the growing downtown cultural arts district.
According to the Ohio Magazine listing: “When it isn’t showing a steady stream of first-run flicks, the Strand Theatre in downtown Delaware—one of the oldest movie houses in continuous operation in the country—gives new meaning to the term ‘community theater.’ A summer kids’ movie series pulls in donated school supplies and sporting goods for needy children; events on the theater stage raise money for the American Cancer Society and local health department programs; and free tickets are given to those taking part in Red Cross blood drives.”
The honor has Strand manager Kara Long smiling from ear to ear as the historic movie theatre begins its 95th year of operation. Long also is quick to thank Delaware resident Jeff Robinson for nominating the Strand for inclusion among Ohio’s best attractions and events.
“I really appreciate this,” Long says. “The Strand is committed to being an active part of the community, and it’s nice to be noticed for our efforts.”
Robinson, Powell’s public information officer and an Ohio Magazine contributing writer, says nominating the Strand was an easy decision.
“When it comes to helping others, Kara never says no,” Robinson says. “She always says, ‘we’ll get it done.’ I’m glad I could help give her and the Strand some added recognition.”
Robinson currently is working with Long on this year’s “Comics for a Cure,” a fundraiser begun by Robinson in memory of his mother. Proceeds benefit local Relay for Life efforts, which support the American Cancer Society.
The ninth annual event will be held Feb. 26 at the theatre, where tickets are being sold now. The evening lineup includes Tom Foss, a regular on Sirius Radio and “The Bob and Tom Show;” Kay Frances, who has appeared on Lifetime’s “Girls’ Night Out” and NBC’s “America’s Funniest People;” and Sunny95 radio morning host Dino Tripodis.
