South Asia Scholar to Discuss ‘The Warrior State’

DELAWARE, Ohio – T.V. Paul, James McGill Professor of International Relations at Montreal’s McGill University, will lead a discussion at Ohio Wesleyan University on the geopolitical setbacks Pakistan has faced in the past decades, including negative effects of foreign aid.
Paul, Ph.D., will speak at 7:30 p.m. April 2 in Benes Room B of Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. His latest book, “The Warrior State: Pakistan in the Contemporary World,” examines Pakistan’s current role as a semi-failed state, and how this is a result of its position trapped in the middle of the Cold War and the War on Terror.
Published in the fall of 2013, “The Warrior State” has been well-received by critics.
“Paul clarifies why nuclear-armed Pakistan continues to neglect all other aspects of development to maintain military parity with India,” writes Husain Haqqani, a former Pakistani ambassador to the United States and current professor of international relations at Boston University.
Paul has written five books – and co-authored another – on international relations, politics, and conflict, and he is well-known for examining issues through case studies rather than general paradigms. His works focus specifically on power relations, South Asia, and nuclear politics.
He earned his doctorate in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles; Masters of Political Science degree from Maharajas College, and Masters of Philosophy from the School of International Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Paul has taught at McGill for more than 20 years. He is the founding director of the McGill-University of Montreal Center for International Peace and Security Studies, as well as vice president of the International Studies Association.
He has been a visiting professor for the Naval Postgraduate School and a visiting scholar for both the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Study Center at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard University.
