Sean Kay Named to New Position

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University has announced the appointment of Sean Kay, Ph.D., Robson Professor of Politics and Government, as director of the university’s Arneson Institute for Practical Politics and Public Affairs.
Kay also is the chair of the International Studies interdisciplinary program. He has received the Bishop Francis Kearns award for outstanding teaching at Ohio Wesleyan and was the first recipient of the university’s Libuse L. Reed Endowed Professorship.
The Arneson Institute, which Kay will head, was established in 1947 by Ohio Wesleyan professor Ben Arneson. Today, the institute hosts and manages the “Wesleyan in Washington” program of internship study for Ohio Wesleyan students; brings national and international guest speakers to campus; supports interdisciplinary student and faculty research projects involving local, state, national, and international public policy; conducts Ohio Wesleyan’s seminal Mock Convention, during which students conduct a presidential nomination process, the oldest such event in the world; and assists the University’s Model United Nations and Moot Court teams. The Arneson Institute also supports the Civic Arts Review, a journal focusing on the relationships between education and public life.
In addition to his Ohio Wesleyan appointments, Kay is a Mershon Associate at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies at The Ohio State University and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Eisenhower Institute in Washington, D.C. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kent State University, master’s degrees from Kent State and the Free University of Brussels, and a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts.
Kay has authored numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles focusing on international relations. A world-renowned expert in security issues, he has written multiple books including “Global Security in the 21st Century: The Quest for Power and the Search for Peace” (2nd edition, Rowman and Littlefield, 2011), “Celtic Revival? The Rise, Fall, and Renewal of Global Ireland” (Rowman and Littlefield, 2011), and “NATO and the Future of European Security” (Rowman and Littlefield, 1998), as well as co-edited volumes.
