Pictured here during Ohio Wesleyan’s Heritage Day event on November 11, is Will Pierce ’13 portraying professional Shakespearean actor Frederick Ward in a re-enactment of the 1885 scandal during which 60 OWU students were suspended from school for attending the performance of “Richard III” at the Delaware Opera House. As Bonnie Milne Gardner ’77, OWU theatre and dance professor explains, the mannequin in the background is sporting a female Shakespearean costume (the male costume is not visible in this photograph). The other students seated portrayed the shamed students who disobeyed the University rule forbidding attendance at “entertainments.” Seated to the left of Will is alumnus Kevin Barron ’07, who returned to pay tribute to the 2007 production of “Henry IV”, which was directed by theatre and dance professor Ed Kahn. Numerous other tributes were made to former OWU faculty and students who made significant contributions to Shakespeare’s plays over the years, explains Milne Gardner. Read more about Heritage Day.
