Ross Art Museum to Display Paintings by Paul Ching-Bor
Artist to Present Illustrated Talk Sept. 30 in Advance of Oct. 1 Exhibition Opening
DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum will welcome acclaimed artist Paul Ching-Bor to campus at 4:10 p.m. Sept. 30 for a gallery talk and tour of his upcoming exhibit “Sur.” The show will run from Oct. 1 through Nov. 13 at the museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.
Ching-Bor’s work captures the urban scenery of Manhattan’s skyscrapers, street crossings, bridge constructions, and harbor facilities, often infused with a dark, desolate aura. His talk will be followed by a free community reception at the museum from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Art historian and curator Manfred Schneckenburger says of Ching-Bor’s work: “It seems as though Ching-Bor’s city were burdened by a clandestine threat, a first intimation of decay, a latent pull toward abandonment and dissolution, an apocalyptic overtone. … Ching-Bor virtuosically plays with captivating presence on the one hand and vanishing architectural fragments on the other. Central perspective and bird’s-eye view interpenetrate, work in opposite directions, and ultimately merge to create an inextricable interweaving of near and far, tangible presence and insubstantial mirage.”
The artist himself states that he is intrigued by using the delicate, romantic medium of watercolor to capture starker, more sinister landscapes. He also is influenced by the initial vulnerability and fragility of human life now hardened by time and experience.
