Ohio Wesleyan University’s sustainability efforts are making the grade.
In this year’s College Sustainability Report Card, released Wednesday, Ohio Wesleyan earned a respectable B- for its efforts to make the campus more environmentally friendly, up from a C+ last year.
Information for the report card was compiled over the summer and submitted to the Sustainable Endowments Institute—a special project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. The report assesses 52 indicators, including green building initiatives, recycling programs, and endowment investment policies.
OWU students earned an A grade in the report for their many educational and green-promoting activities. Areas that received B ratings included administration, food & recycling, endowment transparency, and investment priorities.
Ohio Wesleyan Vice President for Finance and Administration and Treasurer Eric Algoe says he is pleased the University’s green report card grade has improved significantly during the past two years.
“We are currently reviewing the preliminary results of a campus-wide energy audit, and a new campus sustainability coordinator will soon be hired,” Algoe says. “Thanks to the continued good work of the Sustainability Task Force, I believe we will be able to make even more progress in implementing and managing sustainability issues on campus this year, and I hope to see another improvement to our grade next year.”
