Public Health Expert to Speak Oct. 22 at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – Guillermo Mendoza, M.D., of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) will discuss “Priorities in Public Health in Latin America: Why Languages Matter in the Aspirations for Universal Health Coverage” when he speaks at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Mendoza will speak in Benes Room B of Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The event is free and open to the public.

In his 20 years with the PAHO, Mendoza has worked across both American continents, first as an officer for resource mobilization at the U.S.-Mexican border and then as country program adviser for Bolivia, Cuba, and the Southern Cone, a region encompassing the southernmost areas of South America.

Mendoza now serves as country program adviser for Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, and Cuba. These areas will be the subject of his OWU presentation discussing universal health coverage, the role of international health agencies, and how their official languages – English, French, Portuguese, Spanish – have made information and health programs accessible to the public in Latin America.

As a country program adviser, Mendoza offers analysis on existing health programs within and across nations and suggestions on how to improve public health deficiencies. In addition to his medical degree, he holds a master’s degree in public health, both from the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez, where he taught human anatomy for 10 years.

Mendoza’s presentation is sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan’s International Studies Program, Arneson Institute for Practical Politics and Public Affairs, and the Department of Modern Foreign Languages.
