Professor Barbara MacLeod Discusses Collegiate Athletics, U.S. Olympic Team in New York Times
“In the U.S., the traditional route for most professional athletes is to attend a Division I school, then turn pro,” MacLeod tells reporter Tim Wendel. “In Europe, however, most sports competition occurs through clubs, not schools. … If many other colleges follow Maryland’s lead to cut track, I believe we’ll see a resurgence of club activity. The end result will be reconfiguring of competition, but not a detriment to U.S. Olympic prospects.”
