OWU Alumnae Athletes to be Recognized

In 1972, Title IX was passed into law, banning sex discrimination in academics or athletics within schools. This legislation prevented women from being denied participation in athletics.
On Saturday, at Ohio Wesleyan’s women’s basketball game against Wittenberg University, the Ohio Wesleyan athletic department will be celebrating the female athletes who bravely participated in their respective sports before Title IX was passed. Female athletes who competed before North Coast Athletic Conference competition began in the 1984-85 academic year are also invited to attend.
“This is all about recognizing those who laid the foundation for today’s athletic program at Ohio Wesleyan,” said Roger Ingles, Ohio Wesleyan athletics director. “It’s an opportunity for us to show appreciation for how difficult it was for them to compete, and an opportunity for our women athletes to see how far they have come.”
Before the game, all student-athlete alumnae are invited to a reception where memorabilia and pictures will be on display. They also will be presented with varsity letters.
During halftime of the women’s game, the athletes will be celebrated for their brave athletic participation.
Marge Redmond, field hockey coach and senior woman administrator, has organized this event as part of Ohio Wesleyan’s celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. All current athletes are invited and encouraged to meet with these alumnae to learn about the legacy each one left at Ohio Wesleyan.
