Ohio Wesleyan’s Austin Manor Featured in California Newspaper
DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University’s unique intergenerational living and learning community Austin Manor is featured in a new commentary by John L. Gann Jr., a Chicago-area expert in economic development marketing.
The commentary, “The second senior class: New opportunities for colleges,” appeared in the Nov. 18 edition of The Davis Enterprise in California. In it, Gann states that other colleges and universities may benefit by emulating the Ohio Wesleyan concept.
“Scholarly research affirms the benefits to elders of daily association with young people,” Gann writes. “Frequent contact with older adults who are neither faculty nor doting relatives likewise benefits students, since it is with such people that they will have to interact with successfully once out of school. …
“In coming years it will be more incumbent than ever for colleges and universities to think outside the traditional academic box, as OWU has done, in putting its resources to productive use,” Gann states.
He also includes information about Austin Manor in his book, “The Third Lifetime Place: A New Economic Opportunity for College Towns.”
