The Ohio Wesleyan women’s golf team has already made significant improvements over last season.

According to Golfstat rankings, OWU was the 118th-best team in the country last season. This year, they had already moved up to 58th as of September 26.

“We need to be in the top 25 to make nationals,” said head coach Jana Shipley.

The improvement is a huge step forward for the third-year program.

Junior Annaliese Harvey is one person who has improved a lot in her time with the program, according to Shipley. This season, Harvey has an average score of 99.67 through six rounds, with a low score of 94.

Both of those scores are well below her freshman year average of 133.33, marking an improvement of almost 35 strokes per round since she started playing.

The program as a whole has made similar improvements over the past three seasons. During the 2010-11 season, the four-player average for the team was 461.80, for an average of a little over 115 per player.

This year, the team has a four-player average of 361.25, for an improvement of over 100 strokes per four-player team.

Looking forward, Shipley is confident that she can field a whole starting lineup that can consistently shoot in the 80s each round.

“Some of them haven’t played to their potential yet, but I’m confident they can shoot in the 80s,” said Shipley.

College golf teams field a starting lineup of five for each tournament, with four players’ scores counted toward the team total.
