Ohio Wesleyan University to Celebrate Community Day Oct. 22

DELAWARE, OH — Ohio Wesleyan University is inviting the Delaware and Central Ohio communities to come to campus Oct. 22 for a day filled with free special events ranging from Battling Bishop athletic competitions to an arboretum tour to fine art, music, and theatre events.
Ohio Wesleyan’s 2011 Community Day will include the participation of OWU students and employees in the local observance of national “Make A Difference Day.” For information on this “national day of doing good,” including how to volunteer, visit www.delawarecountyvolunteers.org/mddsignup.html.
Afterward, the community is invited to come to the Ohio Wesleyan campus to enjoy a full schedule of free social and cultural events. Continuing the “Make A Difference” theme, the university will collect canned goods at all events to benefit Delaware’s People In Need (PIN) Inc., a nonprofit organization that aids local families.
Free Oct. 22 Ohio Wesleyan Community Day events will include:
10 a.m. – Public walking tours of OWU’s Jane Decker Arboretum. Participants should meet on the plaza in front of University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St. The university’s arboretum includes 105 species of trees and woody plants from temperate regions around the world.
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Art exhibitions at OWU’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum. Normally closed Saturdays, the museum will have special Community Day hours. On exhibit are “Sarah Rhymes with Clara,” by New York photographer Susan Paulsen, OWU Class of 1980, featuring images from her new book of the same name, and “Microscopy” by Dennison Griffith, OWU Class of 1974, featuring paintings by Griffith, president of Columbus College of Art & Design. The museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., is fully handicap-accessible and admission is always free. Normal museum hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. 1 p.m. – OWU Football versus DePauw University, in Selby Stadium, 45 S. Henry St. The game also will be streamed live online at StreamOWU. For anyone wishing to tailgate in advance of this or any Battling Bishop event, please remember that alcohol is not permitted at university athletic competitions. The 1971 Battling Bishop Football Team—OWU’s Ohio Athletic Conference champion/Stagg Bowl team—will be honored during halftime. 3:15 p.m. – OWU Music Department Faculty Recital featuring part-time assistant professor Gulimina Mahamuti, D.M.A., on piano and guest Selim Giray, D.M.A., on violin, in Jemison Auditorium in Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St. Their concert will be a free preview of the Carnegie Hall performance they will make in New York in January 2012. 7 p.m. – OWU Women’s Soccer against The College of Wooster, at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave. 8 p.m. – OWU Department of Theatre & Dance presents its Senior Project Production, “The Ant Bed,” a wacky comedy by Charles Emery, in the Studio Theatre in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave. The PG-rated comedy examines a marriage in which the wife thinks her ant-obsessed husband takes her for granted, leading her to convince a robber to pretend he’s an old flame.
