Ohio Wesleyan University Selected as ‘Summer on the Cuyahoga’ School

DELAWARE, OHIO – Ohio Wesleyan University has been selected to participate in the prestigious “Summer on the Cuyahoga” internship program, becoming one of seven colleges and universities nationwide whose students are eligible to apply for the program’s 2012 eight-week and 10-week paid internships.

Ohio Wesleyan joins Case Western Reserve University, Colgate University, Cornell University, Smith College, University of Chicago, and Yale University in being selected to participate in Summer on the Cuyahoga. The competitive program will invite 50 to 60 talented undergraduates to Cleveland for a summer program that provides paid internships in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Students selected also will receive free housing for the summer.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Ohio Wesleyan students not only to engage in a prestigious internship program, but also to engage with OWU alumni and talented students from other institutions, and to learn more about what another great Midwestern city has to offer,” said Leslie J. Delerme, M.S.Ed, director of career services at Ohio Wesleyan. “The fact that students also will be paid and offered housing for the summer is an important, added benefit.”

The summer internship program is followed by fall and spring campus recruiting initiatives for Cleveland employers interested in hiring students for full-time positions.

In addition to internships and full-time job opportunities, the Summer on the Cuyahoga program also sponsors events during the summer to enhance the students’ understanding of and experience in Cleveland. These events include discussions with political and business leaders, cultural and social offerings, community service opportunities, and alumni gatherings. Students are paired with local alumni host families who help them adjust to Cleveland and provide additional community connections.

Since it was founded nine years ago, Summer on the Cuyahoga has recruited more than 160 employers offering paid internships and secured internships for more than 500 students. More than 65 students have returned to Cleveland after completing the program, either to accept a full-time job or to attend graduate school.

“We are excited to welcome Ohio Wesleyan University to Summer on the Cuyahoga and look forward to welcoming their talented students to Northeast Ohio for participation in our program,” said Bernie Gosky, executive director of Summer on the Cuyahoga.

Summer on the Cuyahoga is open to current college sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a grade point average of at least 3.0.
