Ohio Wesleyan University Receives Spanish Film Club Grant
DELAWARE, OHIO – Ohio Wesleyan University is one of 44 colleges and universities nationwide selected to receive a 2012 Spanish Film Club Grant to support a fall festival of contemporary Spanish and Latin American films.
The grant was awarded by Pragda, an independent, New York- based cultural initiative created to examine the legacy of Spanish-language films and films from Spain, and to bring the films to diverse audiences around the world. The Spanish Film Club series was made possible with the support of Pragda, the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain, and its Program for Cultural Cooperation with United States’ Universities.
Ohio Wesleyan received the grant as a result of a proposal written by Glenda Y. Nieto-Cuebas, Ph.D., and Andrea Colvin, Ph.D., assistant professors of Spanish in the university’s Department of Modern Foreign Languages.
The fall festival will be free and open to the public, and it will feature films including “Chico & Rita” (2012, Cuba); “Lope” (2011, Spain); “La Yuma” (2011, Nicaragua); “Southern District” (2011, Bolivia); “From the Land to Your Table” (2009, Argentina, Bolivia, Perú, Colombia, Venezuela, and Spain). All films will feature English subtitles. Times and dates for the screenings will be announced at a later date.
The film festival also is being supported by Ohio Wesleyan’s Dean of Academic Affairs, Department of Modern Foreign Languages, Latin American Studies Program, and other departments.
