Ohio Wesleyan University Appoints Dean of Academic Affairs

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University today announced the appointment of Martin J. Eisenberg, Ph.D., as dean of academic affairs. Eisenberg currently serves as interim dean of the School of Arts and Letters, associate provost, and associate professor of economics at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
Eisenberg will join Ohio Wesleyan on July 29 and report to Charles L. Stinemetz, Ph.D., provost.
“Marty Eisenberg brings more than a decade of higher education leadership to Ohio Wesleyan,” said Stinemetz, who served as dean of academic affairs before becoming provost. “He has worked extensively with students to help them make the most of their college experiences and collaboratively with faculty to support the development of interdisciplinary courses. He will be a welcomed addition to Ohio Wesleyan.”
Eisenberg joined Truman State University in 2001 as associate provost and associate professor of economics. He became interim dean in 2012. While at Missouri’s public liberal arts and sciences university, Eisenberg’s accomplishments have included:
Assisting with first-year student advising and retention, including working with staff to develop a model to identify and aid students likely to struggle during their first semesters as well as initiating a summer reading program to help freshmen understand the value and meaning of a liberal arts education. Planning and implementing Truman’s Center for Academic Excellence. Reviewing curricular changes, including working with the Department of English to develop a curriculum that awards credit for time spent both inside and outside of the classroom. Helping to develop and implement an interdisciplinary major, interdisciplinary minors, and junior interdisciplinary seminar, and working with both students proposing interdisciplinary majors and faculty creating interdisciplinary seminars. Designing and implementing an assessment database to more effectively relate assessment measures with traditional classroom measures. Participating in Truman State’s self-study for reaccreditation and strategic planning initiatives.Eisenberg earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining Truman State, he served as registrar and coordinator of academic research, and assistant to the dean for academic records at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. During that time, he also worked as an associate and assistant professor of economics. In 2009-2010, he served as an American Council on Education Leadership Fellow.

In addition to Eisenberg’s hire, Stinemetz also thanked Barbara Andereck, Ph.D., for her service as interim dean of academic affairs during the 2012-2013 academic year and announced that she is transitioning from associate dean to assistant provost for assessment and accreditation. Also, Dale Swartzentruber, Ph.D., is transitioning from to associate dean to associate provost for institutional research and academic budget management. Both will report directly to the provost’s office.
