Ohio Wesleyan University Announces October Public Events
DELAWARE, OH – Ohio Wesleyan University today announced its October 2012 lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, all events are free of charge. Through Oct. 7 – “Full of Grace: A Journey through the History of Childhood,” a collection of more than 150 photographs depicting childhood from artists including Dorthea Lange, Gordon Park, August Sander, Ralph Gibson, and Lewis Carroll, in the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is handicap-accessible and admission is always free. 7 p.m. Oct. 1 – “Bite!” – the 2012 Sagan National Colloquium – presents Anjali Bhatia, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi, India, discussing how the fast-food culture among Indian youth requires people to think about a reconfiguration of the family and ensuing tensions in global-local contexts. 7 p.m. Oct. 4 – “Bite!” – the 2012 Sagan National Colloquium – presents Joel Salatin, third-generation alternative farmer in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and author of “Folks, This Ain’t Normal: A Farmer’s Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World.” Salatin will speak in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware.
7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 – The Ohio Wesleyan chapter of Theta Alpha Phi (National Theatre Honorary) presents “The Red & Black Review,” an annual campus fund-raising talent show, on the Main Stage in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. May contain adult themes and language. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens, Ohio Wesleyan employees, and non-Ohio Wesleyan students. 8 p.m. Oct. 5, 12, 19, and 26 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Oct. 6 – OWU Community Day, featuring free admission to Battling Bishop sporting events, including the OWU men’s and women’s soccer games. Members of the 2011 national championship men’s soccer team will receive their championship rings during the men’s game, and the first 900 fans through the gate will receive free tumblers commemorating the championship. 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Free youth soccer clinic for boys and girls ages 8 to14 participating in Delaware Youth Athletic Association (DYAA) soccer. The clinic, with training and tips from OWU coaches and players, will be held at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m., and youths must bring completed registration and medical release forms, available from their DYAA coaches. Participants also need to bring their own cleats, soccer ball, shin guards, and water. 10 a.m. to noon – Guided tours of the newly renovated Stuyvesant Hall residential facility, 223 W. William St., Delaware. The event will feature remarks at 11 a.m. and light refreshments. Stuyvesant Hall, which opened in 1931, is one of 11 OWU sites on the National Register of Historic Places. 11 a.m. – OWU Field Hockey vs. DePauw, at Selby Stadium, 45 S. The event will feature a panel of experts sharing predictions for the upcoming year for the local, national, and international economies. Scheduled panelists are James T. Scharf, professor of law at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, discussing “Shaping Foreign Policy in Times of Crisis,” in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. In 2005, Scharf and the Public International Law and Policy Group were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for work supporting the prosecution of major war criminals including Saddam Hussein. Scharf’s presentation is part of the Corinne Lyman Lecture Series on International Studies.
