Ohio Wesleyan University Announces November Public Events

Through Nov. 13 – “Sarah Rhymes with Clara,” by Susan Paulsen, OWU Class of 1980, featuring photographs from her new book, and “Microscopy” by Dennison Griffith, M.F.A., OWU Class of 1974, featuring paintings from Griffith, president of Columbus College of Art & Design. Both exhibits are on display in OWU’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
7 p.m. Nov. 1 – OWU’s 2011 Sagan National Colloquium presents George A. Mensah, M.D., vice president of Global Nutrition, Global Research & Development at PepsiCo Inc., discussing “Nutrition and Health in Africa: Crucial Challenges to Sustainable Development and Progress,” in the Benes Rooms in Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave.
Nov. 2 (tentative) – North Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament (semifinals), at Roy at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave.
Nov. 2-Dec. 16 – “Consuming the American Landscape,” by John Ganis, M.F.A., OWU Class of 1972, featuring photographs that chronicle the effects of development and extraction industries across the United States. His work will be on display in both OWU’s Alumni Gallery in Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., and OWU’s Gallery 2001 in Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave. The Alumni Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Gallery 2001 is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to midnight, Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to midnight. Ganis also will discuss his work in an artist’s talk at 4:10 p.m. Nov. 8 in Room 121 of Edgar Hall, 35 S. Sandusky St.
4:10 p.m. Nov. 3 – OWU’s Science Lecture Series presents Franziska Hinkelmann, post-doctoral student at The Ohio State University, discussing discrete models in biological systems and cancer research, in Room 163 of Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St.
7 p.m. Nov. 3 – OWU’s 2011 Sagan National Colloquium presents Deborah Bräutigam, Ph.D., OWU Class of 1976, faculty member in the International Development Program at American University, discussing “China in Africa: What’s Really Going On?”, in the Benes Rooms in Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave. This event will be streamed live and archived at StreamOWU.
5 p.m. Nov. 4 through 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 – “Radical Gospel Living: Monasticism Today,” an ecumenical conference, on the Ohio Wesleyan campus. The conference is sponsored by the Office of the University Chaplain. Registration is $42 for students and $52 for the general public. Registration deadline is Oct. 28.
8 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5, and 2 p.m. Nov. 6 – OWU’s Opera Theater presents a program geared toward children, directed by Jason Hiester, M.M. Music will include selections from “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and “Marriage of Figaro.” The program will be held in Jemison Auditorium in Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students, OWU employees, and senior citizens. 8 p.m. Nov. 4, 5, 11 and 12, and 2 p.m. Nov. 13 – OWU’s Department of Theatre & Dance presents “Dear Brutus,” a comedic romp set during a weekend at a country estate, on the Main Stage in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for non-OWU students, senior citizens, and OWU employees. 8 p.m. Nov. 4, 11, and 18 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 – OWU’s 2011 Economic Outlook Conference sponsored by the Department of Economics and the Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship. Three panelists will discuss the regional, national, and international economy and take questions. Scheduled panelists are Bill LaFayette, Ph.D., founder of Columbus, Ohio-based Regionomics LLC; Ian Sheldon, Ph.D., professor of agricultural, environmental, and development economics at The Ohio State University; and Guhan Venkatu, an economist in the Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. The conference will be held in the Benes Rooms in Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave. This event will be streamed live and archived at StreamOWU.

8 p.m. Nov. 10 – Perkins Observatory’s New Vistas in Astronomy lecture presents Brad Peterson, Ph.D., of The Ohio State University discussing “The Great Observatories of South America,” at the observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 15 – Lima Company Memorial, The Eyes of Freedom, an exhibit of paintings depicting 23 members of Lima Company who died in Iraq in 2005, in the Benes Rooms in Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave. Arranged by the American Red Cross Delaware County Chapter, this exhibit honoring America’s military will be on display at Ohio Wesleyan for one day only.
