Ohio Wesleyan University Announces January Public Events

DELAWARE, OH – Ohio Wesleyan University today announced its January 2013 lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free. For the latest OWU event information, including schedule updates, visit Events @ OWU. For Battling Bishop athletics schedules, visit BattlingBishops.com.

Through April 16 – Xiamen photo collage by Susan Shafer, Ohio Wesleyan Class of 1959, in the Alumni Gallery in Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

8 p.m. Jan. 11, 18, and 25 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Advance tickets are $8 for adults, and $6 for children and senior citizens. Reserve tickets by calling (740) 363-1257.

Jan. 7-Feb. 28 – Paintings by Columbus, Ohio, artist Andy!, in Gallery 2001 in Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Gallery hours coincide with library hours.

6 p.m. Jan. 9 – OWU Women’s Basketball vs. Denison, at Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. This event will be streamed live at StreamOWU.

Jan. 15-Feb. 17 – Sculpture by Barry Gunderson, featuring painted wood and welded and painted aluminum creations, in the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year. 7 p.m. Jan. 19 – 49th annual President’s High School Band Festival, and Ohio Wesleyan’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Park Avenue Jazz Ensemble, in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware.

2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

3 p.m. Jan. 20 – 28th annual worship service featuring the Rev. Dr. Albert Paul Brinson, a colleague of Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and others active in the civil rights movement, at First Presbyterian Church, 73 W. Winter St., Delaware. 7:45 a.m. Jan. 21 – 20th annual MLK Breakfast Celebration sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan University and the Delaware County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, in the Benes Rooms of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The breakfast buffet will begin at 7:45 a.m. and the program at 8:30 a.m. Individual breakfast tickets are $20, with eight-person table sponsorships available for $160. Reservations and payment are requested before Jan. 16, 2013, but tickets will be available at the door. 7 p.m. Jan. 21 – Ohio Wesleyan professor of religion Emmanuel Twesigye, Ph.D., will discuss “President Barack Obama’s Second Inauguration as a Celebration of Dr. King’s Dream,” location to be announced.

7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 – Timothy Snyder, D.Phil., the Housum Professor of History at Yale University, will discuss “Global Holocaust: The Central European Past and Our Future,” in Benes Rooms A and B inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Snyder’s presentation represents the university’s first Robert Kragalott Lecture on Genocide, Mass Atrocity, and Human Rights.

7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 – OWU Men’s Basketball vs. Wittenberg, at Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. This event will be streamed live at StreamOWU.
