Ohio Wesleyan University Announces January 2014 Public Events

8 p.m. Jan. 10, 17, 24, and 31 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Jan. 14 through Feb. 2 – “FA8,” the biennial Ohio Wesleyan fine art faculty exhibition continues, featuring creations by eight OWU professors working in clay, metal, photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting and drawing, and graphic design, in the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is handicap-accessible and admission is always free. Jan. 14 through Feb. 25 – “Confederate Currency: The Color of Money,” featuring acrylic paintings by artist John W. Jones, in Gallery 2001 inside Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave. Jones’ paintings reclaim images of slavery appearing on currency used by the Confederate and Southern states in the 19th century. Jones will discuss his artwork and its meaning at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Bayley Room, located on the second floor of the library, with a reception afterward in Gallery 2001. 3 p.m. Jan. 19 – 29th annual worship service featuring Pastor Kimberly Strain of Delaware’s Outreach Christian Center, speaking at Zion AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church, 140 S. Washington St., Delaware. 7:45 a.m. January 20 – 21st annual MLK Breakfast Celebration sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan University and the Delaware County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, in the Benes Room of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Bishop Gregory Vaughn Palmer, Episcopal Leader of the Ohio West Area of the United Methodist Church, will serve as keynote speaker. Film clips and a discussion of “Freedom Riders,” an Emmy award-winning documentary, will be guided by Hasan Jeffries, Ph.D., associate professor of history at The Ohio State University. Advance screening is encouraged but not required. “Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle” is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of its “Bridging Cultures” initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. 7 p.m. Jan. 23 – The Ohio Wesleyan President’s Commission on Racial and Cultural Diversity presents “White Like Me: Race, Racism & White Privilege in America,” a documentary film based on the work of anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise, who argues that society’s failure to come to terms with white privilege continues to perpetuate racial inequality and race-driven political resentments. The screening will be held in Benes Room B inside OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Following the film, Paul Dean, Ph.D., Ohio Wesleyan assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, will moderate an audience discussion.
