Ohio Wesleyan University Announces December Public Events

Through Dec. 16 – “Consuming the American Landscape” by John Ganis, M.F.A., OWU Class of 1972, featuring photographs that chronicle man’s impact on the U.S. environment. His work is on display in both OWU’s Alumni Gallery in Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., and OWU’s Gallery 2001 in Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave. Gallery 2001 hours coincide with library hours and are available online. The Alumni Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Dec. 1, 2011, through Feb. 5, 2012 – Ohio Wesleyan fine arts faculty exhibition, in the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St. An artists’ reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 8. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will close for winter break Dec. 17 and reopen Jan. 17. 4:10 p.m. Dec. 1 – The OWU Science Lecture Series presents Christine Anderson, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology and environmental science at Capital University, discussing the effects of forest fragmentation on the abundance, distribution, and population genetic structure of white-footed mice, in Room 163 of the Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St.
6 p.m. Dec. 2 – OWU Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams versus Urbana University, in the Meek Aquatics and Recreation Center, 150 S. Henry St.
8 p.m. Dec. 2, 3 – OWU Department of Theatre & Dance presents Student-Directed One Act Plays, in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave. These productions may contain adult themes and language.
8 p.m. Dec. 2, 9, and 16 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. 6 p.m. Dec. 4 – OWU’s Department of Music presents “Civil War Reflections,” a multi-media choral presentation conceived and directed by Jason Hiester, assistant professor of music, featuring Ohio Wesleyan’s Choral Art Society, Chamber Choir, Women’s Ensemble, and Men’s Ensemble, and Columbus Dance Theatre, as well as projected images, dramatic readings, poetry, historic speeches, dance, and heart-wrenching letters from battle-worn soldiers, in Gray Chapel, inside University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St.
5:30 p.m. Dec. 5 – Fourth Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in memory of Ron Hudler (OWU Class of 1956), in front of Sturges Hall near the intersections of South Sandusky Street and Park Avenue. The event will feature music and refreshments.

8 p.m. Dec. 8 – New Vistas in Astronomy lecture featuring Rick Pogge, Ph.D., astronomy professor at The Ohio State University, discussing “A Most Agreeable Spectacle: The Transits of Venus,” at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Sandusky St. Ohio Wesleyan will play Penn State University-DuBois at 6 p.m., and Marietta College will play Ursuline College at 8 p.m. This two-day event will be streamed live and archived afterward at StreamOWU. Admission to the tournament games is free, but monetary donations will be accepted at the door for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund ®, which supports scientific research related to women’s cancers.
