Ohio Wesleyan University Announces August, September Public Events

DELAWARE, OH – Ohio Wesleyan University today announced its August and September 2012 lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, all events are free of charge. Through Sept. 16 – “Checkerboard Musings,” an exhibit of art quilts by Lorraine Torrence, Ohio Wesleyan Class of 1963, in the Alumni Gallery in Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Through Sept. 20 – Papercut collages and paintings by Louise Captein, associate professor of art at Otterbein University, in Gallery 2001 in Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Gallery hours coincide with library hours.

Aug. 23-Oct. 7 – “Full of Grace: A Journey through the History of Childhood,” a collection of more than 150 photographs depicting childhood from artists including Dorthea Lange, Gordon Park, August Sander, Ralph Gibson, and Lewis Carroll, in the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is handicap-accessible and admission is always free. Sept. 8 –OWU Men’s and Women’s Cross Country hosts the OWU Invitational/Great Lakes Colleges Association Cross Country Championship, at Liberty Park, 2507 Home Road, Powell.

8 p.m. Sept. 9 – Jazz musicians Peter Brötzmann (saxophones) and Jason Adasiewicz (vibes) perform as part of the Ohio Wesleyan Performing Arts Series, in Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St., Delaware. 7 p.m. Sept. 13 – “Bite!” – the 2012 Sagan National Colloquium – kicks off with an Ohio Wesleyan panel discussion about food, in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Each year, the colloquium addresses an issue of global significance. This event will be streamed live at StreamOWU.

8 p.m. Sept. 15 – “8,” written by Dustin Lance Black, is a staged reading about California’s Proposition 8 (the rights of same-sex couples to marry), on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. 7 p.m. Sept. 17 – “Bite!” – the 2012 Sagan National Colloquium – presents Florence Reed, president and founder of Sustainable Harvest International, discussing the group’s work with rural Central American communities to implement sustainable land-use practices, in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. 8 p.m. Sept. 20 – Eric Foner, author of “The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery,” will discuss the issue in recognition of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s emancipation policy announcement, in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The lecture is the 2012 Richard W. Smith Lecture in Civil War History. This event will be streamed live at StreamOWU.

4-8 p.m. Sept. 22 – EarthDance Delaware 2012, a synchronized dance event promoting peace, justice, and sustainability though the universal languages of music and dance, in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Tickets are $5 per person and may be purchased online. The event will feature OWU dance professor Marin Leggat, OWU dance majors, Bellydance Columbus, Mid-Ohio Boogie Club, The Arts Castle, Fred Astaire Dance Studio, Buckeye Bop, and T.A.N.G.O. Henry St., Delaware. Koont’s current research focuses on agrarian reform and macroeconomic policy in Central America and the Caribbean. This event will be streamed live at StreamOWU.

3:10 p.m. Sept. 28 – Clark Winter, Ohio Wesleyan Class of 1973, an internationally known investor and commentator on geopolitics and global financial markets, discusses “The Global Economy Going Forward – Making Sense of Apparent Nonsense,” in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The lecture is the 2012 Robert L. Milligan Leaders in Business Lecture. This event will be streamed live at StreamOWU.
