Ohio Wesleyan University’s 2014-2015 arts events will include an exhibition by 1983 OWU graduate Jim Zivic, who industrial-luxe furniture clients have included Lou Reed, Yves Saint Laurent, Yoji Yamamoto, and Tom Ford. 8 p.m. Aug. 30 – Claire Porter performs “Prepositions and a Piano: A Celebration of Music as Dance,” melding music, dance, language, and humor in five vignettes. The New York Times describes Porter’s show as “[h]ilarious realism.” The well-known dance artist will be joined by soprano Marla Berg and composer Mary Ellen Childs, and will perform on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. 8 p.m. Sept. 20 – The Senegal St. Joseph Gospel Choir – a symbol of peace, hope, humanity, and brotherhood throughout West Africa – performs traditional Senegalese music, percussion, and dance. As part of the choir’s first North American tour, its 15 singers and four drummers will perform unique interpretations of gospel spirituals, traditional African tunes, Catholic liturgy, and indigenous Muslim songs to reflect the harmony among the major cultures of Senegal. 7:30 p.m. May 2, 2015 – The Central Ohio Symphony performs the U.S. premiere of “The Great Animal Orchestra,” inspired by the work of musician, acoustician, and sound environmentalist Bernie Krause, who uses sound recordings to document human activity on the environment. Four decades later, one of those girls, with a daughter of her own, experiences the collision of past and present, the true cost of survival, and the future that grows out of a traumatized past. Aug. 21 through Sept. 21 – “Tightrope: The Line Between Art and Design,” featuring furniture, drawings, plans, and sculpture by Ohio Wesleyan graduate Jim Zivic, Class of 1983, and paintings by OWU graduate Chris Kahler, OWU Class of 1991. Zivic creates industrial-luxe furniture and flooring using steel, leather, coal and aluminum. Jan. 13 through Feb. 15, 2015 – “Ground Cover/Covering Ground,” an exhibition of installation drawings by Larry Cressman and an exhibition of works from the Ross Art Museum’s permanent collection. Cressman, a professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Art & Design, has spent years exploring drawing as a three-dimensional form of expression. Feb. 24 through April 5, 2015 – Paintings by Edmund Kuehn and an exhibition of works from the Ross Art Museum’s permanent collection. During his career, Kuehn served as director of the Columbus Museum of Art and taught at the Columbus Arts School (now CCAD) and The Ohio State University. May 15 through July 3, 2015 – Exhibitions of paintings by Howard Little and furniture by Eric Nation. Little (1883-1965) was an early California realist landscape painter who captured the essence of the new American frontier. Learn more at www.howardlittlefineart.com.
