Ohio Wesleyan University Announces 2012-2013 Performing Arts Series

DELAWARE, OHIO – Ohio Wesleyan University’s 2012-2013 Performing Arts Series will kick off Sept. 9 with the jazz duo of Peter Brötzmann on the saxophone and Jason Adasiewicz on the vibraphone.
The duo will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 9 in Ohio Wesleyan’s Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St. With a resume that includes 16 solo albums and numerous collaborative recordings and worldwide concert tours, Brötzmann has been described as “a towering presence in European free music since the 1960s.” And music critics have praised Adasiewicz’s talent, stating that the Chicago-based musician has “reinvented the vibes and turned the sound into something more other-worldly.”
Tickets for this and each Performing Arts Series event are $20 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and non-Ohio Wesleyan students (with a valid school ID). Tickets are free for Ohio Wesleyan students and employees with a valid university ID. 8 p.m. Sept. 22 – “The Cody Rivers Show,” featuring improvisational, comedic actors and Ohio Wesleyan alumni Andrew Connor (Class of 1999) and Mike Mathieu (Class of 2000), in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has boasted that “Connor and Mathieu are up there with such international comedy stars as Bill Irwin, Geoff Hoyle, and the Blue Man Group.”
7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 – The Central Ohio Symphony performs in connection with the Ohio Wesleyan Performing Arts Series, which each year brings talented professional artists to Delaware. The Symphony will perform in Gray Chapel inside University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The concert will feature beloved classics from Glinka, Tchaikovsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as a world premiere through the Ohio Composers Project featuring Jesús Morales-Matos (cello). 8 p.m. Oct. 26 – Classical Jam, a collaboration of five in-demand chamber musicians, in Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St., Delaware. Classical Jam’s repertoire ranges from Renaissance dance music and traditional classical works, to improvised performances and original compositions. The Baltimore Sun reports that the “hotshot quintet … promises interesting sounds for veteran and novice classical music listeners alike.” Classical Jam features Marco Granados (flute), Jennifer Choi (violin), Cyrus Beroukhim (violin/viola), Wendy Law (cello), and Justin Hines (percussion).
8 p.m. Dec. 1 – DOUBLE/TAKE, an evening-length dance performance with original music, in Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The performance will showcase Meghan Durham of Columbus, Ohio, and Karl Rogers of Rochester, N.Y. DOUBLE/ TAKE is an ongoing creative endeavor between these two dance artists, involving commissioned duets from a range of internationally recognized artists, as well as original solo work by the performers.
8 p.m. Feb. 22 – Classical and Latin guitarist David Burgess, in Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St., Delaware. Praised by musicians and critics worldwide, Burgess is recognized as one of today’s outstanding guitarists. His international appearances as a soloist and chamber musician have taken him to concert halls throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Far East. First prize winner in the Andrés Segovia Fellowship Competition in New York City, he also has earned top honors in the Ponce International Competition in Mexico City and the 31st International Music Competition in Munich. The Greenwich (Conn.) Time newspaper described one of his live performances as “hauntingly beautiful, tastefully phrased with exquisite nuance and yet with an aristocratic understatement that held his audience spellbound.”
