Ohio Wesleyan to Host Spanish Film Festival Sept. 18-Oct. 6

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University will screen five contemporary Spanish and Latin American feature films between Sept. 18 and Oct. 6 as part of the university’s second annual Spanish Film Festival. Admission is free for all films, which will feature English subtitles.
All screenings, and subsequent discussions, will be held in the Benes Rooms inside Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The 2014 Spanish Film Festival includes:
6:30 p.m. Sept. 18 – “7 cajas” (“7 boxes”): Víctor receives an unusual proposal, to carry seven boxes of unknown content through Market No. 4, but things get complicated along the way. (Thriller/Paraguay). The film will be presented by VIVA, OWU’s Latin American culture group, and Glenda Nieto Cuebas, Ph.D., assistant professor of modern foreign languages.
6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 – “Wrinkles”: An astonishing cocktail of friendship, resistance and life set among the unexpected landscape of an elderly care facility (Drama-animation/Spain). The film will be presented by David Counselman, Ph.D., assistant professor of modern foreign languages.
6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 – “Un cuento chino” (“Chinese Take-Out”): Roberto sees a young Chinese man named expelled from a taxi and helps him to stand. The man does not speak Spanish but has an address tattooed on his arm. Roberto becomes involved with a fruitless search for the man’s uncle and learns the man’s dramatic story along the way (Drama/Argentina). The film will be presented by Andrea Colvin, Ph.D., assistant professor of modern foreign languages.
6:30 p.m. Sept. 30 – “También la lluvia” (“Even the Rain”): As a director and his crew shoot a controversial film about Christopher Columbus in Cochabamba, Bolivia, local people rise up against plans to privatize the water supply (Drama-history/Spain, Mexico, France).
6:30 p.m. Oct. 6 – “Pan negro” (“Black Bread”): In the harsh, post-war Catalan countryside, Andreu, a child who belongs to the losing side, finds the corpses of a man and his son in the forest (Drama-crime/Spain). The film will be presented by Eva París-Huesca, M.A., instructor in modern foreign languages.
The Spanish Film Festival is made possible with the support of Pragda, Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain, and SPAIN arts & culture. The series is presented in collaboration with Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Modern Foreign Languages, the Water: Rites and Rights Course Connection and Department of English, Spanish Program, Film Studies Program, Department of Comparative Literature, Office of the Provost, and VIVA cultural organization.
