Ohio Wesleyan to Host Election Expert Oct. 29

John Sides, Ph.D.

DELAWARE, Ohio – “Will the 2014 Midterm Election Give Republicans Control of Congress?”

Political scientist and Washington Post blogger John Sides will discuss this important issue when he speaks at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Ohio Wesleyan University. His free, public presentation will be held in Benes Room B of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware.

“John Sides is a first-rate expert on campaigns and elections, and those interested in the midterm race won’t want to miss his valuable insights,” said Jenny Holland, Ph.D., assistant professor of politics and government at Ohio Wesleyan. “This election is particularly important because the new balance of power in the House and Senate will influence how the president and Congress interact in the last two years of President Obama’s administration, which will undoubtedly help set the tone for the 2016 presidential race.”

Sides, Ph.D., is an associate professor of political science at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he specializes in public opinion, voting, and U.S. elections. He also helped to found and contributes to the “Monkey Cage,” a political science blog published by The Washington Post and named one of Time Magazine’s 2012 Best Blogs.

He is a co-author of “The Gamble: Choice and Chance in the 2012 Presidential Election,” published in September. The book is described by one reviewer as “a work of real originality and depth. In places it extends existing work and does so with care and sophistication. In other places it breaks new ground, especially with analyses of the interplay between the media and popular references and perceptions.”

Sides also has written for The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, Salon, Boston Review, and Bloomberg View. Learn more about the author and read his political commentary at www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/monkey-cage.

His lecture is sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan’s Arneson Institute for Practical Politics and Public Affairs, which brings prominent national and international experts to campus and supports interdisciplinary student and faculty research involving public policy.
