Ohio Wesleyan to Host Cookbook Author, Food Activist, Eco Chef

Bryant Terry

DELAWARE, Ohio – Bryant Terry, author of “The Inspired Vegan” cookbook and host of the “Urban Organic” web series, will visit the Ohio Wesleyan University campus Sept. 24 to discuss “Food Justice: At the Intersection of Food, Politics, Poverty, Public Health, and the Environment.”

Terry will speak at 7 p.m. in the Benes Rooms inside Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. His presentation is part of the university’s 2012 Sagan National Colloquium, “Bite! Examining the Mutually Transformative Relationship Between People and Food.”

Also on Sept. 24, the university will host a Main Street Delaware Farmers’ Market from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The market, featuring fresh, locally grown produce, will be held along South Sandusky Street and on the JAYwalk pedestrian walkway. The public is invited to attend the market and free evening presentation.

In reviewing, “The Inspired Vegan,” VegNews compares the book to “sitting on a barstool next to Terry while he works away at the kitchen counter. … [E]ach recipe comes complete with a soundtrack and recommended book or film. … This book could be a course for college credit, and should be. … Terry’s passion for justice comes through just as clearly as his enjoyment of open, delicious food.”

Terry completed his chef’s training program at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts in New York City. He also holds a master’s degree in American History from New York University and a bachelor’s degree with honors in English from Xavier University of Louisiana.

Terry is passionate about what he calls food justice, advocating for everyone to have access to healthy, nutritious food.

“If (people) don’t have access to healthy food, or green space, how can they eat well or exercise? We have to think about making policy changes on a government level, but also policy changes within existing institutions, within our communities, like faith-based institutions,” he said in an interview with Oakland North.

In addition to Bryant Terry, the 2012 Sagan National Colloquium will feature speakers including the authors of “Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating” and “Making Supper Safe: One Man’s Quest to Learn the Truth About Food Safety.” For a complete schedule of upcoming Bite! events and speaker profiles, visit the Sagan National Colloquium blog.

Each year, Ohio Wesleyan’s Sagan National Colloquium addresses an issue of international importance. It is funded through an endowment from the late Margaret (Pickett) Sagan and the late John Sagan, both members of the OWU Class of 1948. Past Colloquium speakers have included social activist Gloria Steinem, authors Barbara Ehrenreich and Kurt Vonnegut, Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams, and former President Gerald Ford.
