Ohio Wesleyan to Host Acclaimed Latin American Guitarist

DELAWARE, Ohio – On Feb. 22, Ohio Wesleyan University will host acoustic guitarist and recording artist David Burgess, a musician whose live performances have been described as “hauntingly beautiful.”
Burgess will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 22 in Ohio Wesleyan’s Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St., Delaware. Tickets are available now for the show, part of the university’s 2012-2013 Performing Arts Series.
Burgess will perform works by several acclaimed Latin American composers, including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Ernesto Nazareth, and Raphael Rabello.
After watching Burgess in concert, a Greenwich (Conn.) Time reviewer wrote: “His performance was hauntingly beautiful, tastefully phrased with exquisite nuance and yet with an aristocratic understatement that held his audience spellbound.”
A reviewer from CD NOW wrote: “The breadth of his imagination is unmatched. His style is flashy, crisp, exciting and incendiary.”
His international appearances as a soloist and chamber musician have taken Burgess to concert halls throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Far East. Recent highlights include multiple concert tours of Europe; repeated recitals in New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, and Nashville; and numerous appearances as an orchestral soloist, including featured performances with the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York and with the American Chamber Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.
Burgess is a first-prize winner in the Andrés Segovia Fellowship Competition in New York City, and he has won top honors in the Ponce International Competition in Mexico City, the Guitar ’81 Competition in Toronto, and the 31st International Music Competition in Munich.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in music at the University of Washington and his Diploma di Merito while on full scholarship at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy.
Tickets for his Delaware performance are $20 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and non-Ohio Wesleyan students (with a valid school ID).
