Ohio Wesleyan to Hold Summer Science Research Symposium

DELAWARE, Ohio – Developing therapies for genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. Creating inexpensive and effective ways to filter harmful bacteria from drinking water. Determining relationships among the accessibility of knowledge, education, age, and reading comprehension in a second language.
Ohio Wesleyan University students will share their research experiences in these and other areas when they participate in the 2012 Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium. The free event will be held at noon in the atrium of Ohio Wesleyan’s Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St.
During this year’s 20th annual symposium, 46 students – including OWU students and students from other universities – will present their research in poster format and then answer questions.
Laura Tuhela-Reuning, Ph.D., assistant director of Ohio Wesleyan’s Summer Science Research Program and a part-time professor of botany-microbiology and zoology, said the research program helps turn students into scientists.
“Students learn quickly that authentic research is quite different from classroom labs – more challenging, more creative, more frustrating, and, ultimately, more rewarding,” said Tuhela-Reuning, who also serves as Ohio Wesleyan’s scanning transmission electron microscopist. “The most rewarding part is watching the students grow as scientists, seeing them take command of a research project, and knowing that they are gaining the confidence to speak and act as scientists.”
Their work as scientists will include some of the Ohio Wesleyan students presenting their findings at national meetings of scientific societies and working with OWU faculty mentors to prepare their research for publication in professional journals.
