Ohio Wesleyan to Hold Baccalaureate, Commencement Ceremonies May 7, 8

The end of the academic year is fast approaching, and soon the Ohio Wesleyan University campus will be saying farewell and good luck to 395 graduating seniors. Family, friends, and the public are invited to two events honoring the graduates May 7 and 8.
Ohio Wesleyan’s Baccalaureate Service will be held at 8 p.m. May 7 in Gray Chapel in University Hall. The theme for this year’s event is “Stone Soup.” Associate Chaplain Chad Johns explains, “This is based on the fable that can be found in various versions from different countries about how people can combine their own gifts with others to achieve a result that is far better than what anyone could produce alone.”
Baccalaureate, planned by a committee of seniors from the OWU Class of 2011 and coordinated through the Chaplain’s Office, is a prayerful and earnest effort to demonstrate the ways in which God has touched the seniors’ lives, informed their faith, and molded their character over their past four years. To follow the “Stone Soup” theme, all students and guests are encouraged to bring a canned food item to donate to the People in Need food pantry in Delaware.
The Baccalaureate service will be streamed live and viewable afterward at StreamOWU.
Ohio Wesleyan University’s 167th Commencement Ceremony will be held outdoors in Phillips Glen (located between Phillips Hall and Merrick Hall) at 1 p.m. May 8. Prize-winning author and internationally recognized political scientist Mary Elizabeth King, OWU Class of 1962, will deliver the keynote address.
Alina Ruzmetova, senior class president, said King’s selection as speaker matches the desire of students to hear from a national speaker with a legacy of public service.
“The movements at OWU for the past several years have reflected Mary King’s global humanitarian and developmental efforts (on a smaller scale), “Ruzmetova says. “The advice given by Dr. Mary King to the Class of 2011 will be invaluable as we transition out of college on our paths toward local and global leadership.”

In case of severe weather, the graduation ceremony will be held inside Gordon Field House in the Branch Rickey Physical Education Center, where seating is limited and admission will be by ticket only.
