Ohio Wesleyan Speaker to Discuss U.S. Foreign Policy, 2012 Election

DELAWARE, OHIO – For the first time in 70 years, foreign policy is a winning issue for Democrats instead of Republicans, who traditionally play the stronger international relations card, says Michael A. Cohen, author of “Live From the Campaign Trail: The Greatest Presidential Campaign Speeches of the 20th Century and How They Shaped Modern America.”
Cohen will discuss U.S. foreign policy and the 2012 election when he presents Sept. 27 at Ohio Wesleyan University.
He will speak at 4:10 p.m. in Room 312 of the R.W. Corns Building, 78 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The event is free and open to the public.
Cohen said he hopes his presentation provides insight into what is happening on the campaign trail and adds rigor to the modern foreign policy debate. During his discussion, sponsored by the university’s International Studies Program, Cohen will examine how political campaigns discuss foreign policy, how these discussions fit into the larger political landscape, and why foreign policy differences matter. Topics will include U.S. relations with China, Iran, and Russia; the defense budget, and the propensity of each political party to use military force, he said.
In addition to being a book author, Cohen is a regular columnist for Foreign Policy, covering politics and national security. His work also has been featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, among others. He previously has served as a senior fellow at the New America Foundation and the American Security Project. He also served in the U.S. Department of State as chief speechwriter for U.S. Representative to the United Nations Bill Richardson and Undersecretary of State Stuart Eizenstat. Cohen also has worked at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and as chief speechwriter for U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn.
