Ohio Wesleyan Honors Scholar-Athletes
Ohio Wesleyan University junior Sharif Kronemer won the highest honor at the seventh annual Dale J. Bruce Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner, held on April 14 in OWU’s Benes Rooms of the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center.
Kronemer, a member of the men’s cross country and track & field teams, received the Presidential Award, recognizing the University’s top athlete and person. The top honor awarded by the Ohio Wesleyan athletics department, the Presidential Award is based on athletics ability and achievement, academic excellence, character, leadership, activities and inspiration.
Receiving Top Ten Awards were junior Alex Bailey, junior Kale Booher , junior Mackenzie Conway, junior Nate Fridley, senior Kayla Gordon, senior Kyle Herman, senior Sarah Ingles, senior Lainey Kekic, senior Sean Patrick, and senior Pam Quigney.
The Top Ten Award is voted upon by the Ohio Wesleyan Athletics Council and is based upon the student-athlete’s impact upon their family, their team, the University and the Delaware community. Bailey is a member of the football team, Booher is a member of the men’s cross country and track & field teams, Conway is a member of the women’s tennis team, Fridley is a member of the men’s golf team, Gordon is a member of the women’s basketball and softball teams, Herman is a member of the men’s track & field and cross country teams, Ingles is a member of the women’s golf team, Kekic is a member of the women’s track & field and volleyball teams, Patrick is a member of the men’s track & field team, and Quigney is a member of the women’s basketball and women’s tennis teams.
The Dr. Jay Martin Award, honoring the top male senior student-athlete, went to senior Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington), a member of the men’s soccer team.
The Nan Carney-DeBord Award, recognizing the top female senior student-athlete, went to senior Kat Zimmerly (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), a member of the women’s track & field and cross country teams.
The Dr. Richard Gordin Award, recognizing the highest cumulative grade point average among senior male student-athletes, went to Herman.
The Mary Parker Award, recognizing the highest cumulative grade point average among senior female student-athletes, went to senior Laura VanHoey.
Also recognized were Ohio Wesleyan’s top 50 student-athletes by cumulative grade point average. They were: junior Nathan Barnett, sophomore Jake Bonnell, junior Kale Booher, junior Morgan Canup, junior Caleb Chiero, senior Christa Cocumelli, junior Mackenzie Conway, senior Hannah Coughlin, sophomore Molly Curry, junior Yavor Danailov, senior Lindsay Dunbar, junior Mason Farr, junior Reed Fogle, junior Nate Fridley, senior Josh Gardner, senior Kayla Gordon, senior Brian Greene, junior Tyler Hall, senior Ryan Harmanis, sophomore Tyler Hendershot, senior Kyle Herman, sophomore Jessie Huschart, sophomore Nathan Kafity, senior Chelsea Kelley, and junior Sharif Kronemer.

The Bob Strimer Director’s Cup, awarded to the Ohio Wesleyan team with the highest cumulative grade point average, went to the women’s tennis team.
The evening’s festivities also included the presentation of the Town-Gown Award, given by the Ohio Wesleyan athletic department in recognition of longstanding relationships with and outstanding support of Ohio Wesleyan student-athletes and athletic programs. The award was presented to OhioHealth. The Dale J. Bruce Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner is named in honor of Dale Bruce ’52, an All-America football end at Ohio Wesleyan who has been a longtime supporter of Battling Bishop athletics.
“This awards program is one of the best we have at Ohio Wesleyan,” says OWU athletics director Roger Ingles. “Each of our top 50 student-athletes brings a professor to the event and can showcase how they got to know each other. At the same time, we have an opportunity to recognize those who have given so much to the campus and community.”
