Ohio Wesleyan Holds First ‘Greek Day of Service’

Members of the Ohio Wesleyan University Greek community joined together Oct. 26 to participate in the first “Greek Day of Service.”
The volunteers partnered with Connections, a Delaware, Ohio-based nonprofit organization, and provided services to more than a dozen locations in the greater Delaware community.
More than 250 fraternity men and sorority women participated in the day of service, held on “National Make a Difference Day,” volunteering for more than 1,000 hours.
“Greek Day of Service is a day dedicated to giving back to our community, discovering the true value of service, and living the mission of our letters,” says OWU residential life coordinator Levi Harrel, one of the coordinators of the event.
“The efforts and hard work put forth by the fraternity and sorority community proves that being an active and engaged fraternity man and sorority woman is knowing that you are part of a system that is bigger than you, but can be better because of you,” Harrel says.
Students volunteered at organizations including HelpLine of Delaware & Morrow Counties Inc., Andrews House, City of Delaware—Mingo Park, Oak Grove Cemetery, The Strand Theatre, Willis Intermediate School, and the Central Ohio Symphony.
The giving hearts of Greek organizations at Ohio Wesleyan go beyond just one day of service. Over fall break, members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity learned their cook was going to help make breakfast at Ronald McDonald House, and the men collected funds to help donate toys and books to the children.
“It is not every day when college students are willing to take money out of their own pockets to do such a wonderful thing,” says Adrienne Burton, cook at Sigma Phi Epsilon.
