Ohio Wesleyan Earth Day Recycling Expo to be Held April 22

Friday, April 22, is Earth Day, and this year’s theme is “A Billion Acts of Green®”—the largest environmental service campaign in the world.
As part of the commemoration, Ohio Wesleyan University will hold a Recycling Exposition at noon on the JAYwalk. The event is being coordinated by OWU student recycling educator Sylvie Hundley.
“We want to change the way you might think about recycling,” says Hundley, a senior from Cincinnati. “This is the chance to learn about why it is relevant today to think about recycling and how easy it is on campus.”
In addition to encouraging the campus community to donate old electronics and participate in a clothing exchange (where they can bring their unwanted clothes and trade them for others), OWU students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to trade in up to five working incandescent light bulbs.
American Electric Power Company is offering a “One-for-One Compact Fluorescent Light Swap.” AEP Ohio’s gridSMART program will exchange working incandescent light bulbs brought in by students, faculty, or staff for energy-efficient CFLs, up to five bulbs maximum. CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs, last up to 10 times longer, and produce 75 percent less heat, which reduces the risk of fire.
Ohio Wesleyan’s new Energy Conservation and Sustainability Coordinator Sean Kinghorn has been in discussions with AEP about this and various energy-related issues.
Earth Day participants also will receive a free reusable water bottle, which can be used in place of disposable bottles. This event is sponsored by the OWU Tree House and the OWU Environment and Wildlife Club.
