Ohio Wesleyan Alumnus, Nobel Prize Winner F. Sherwood Rowland Dies at 84

The OWU community is mourning the loss of 1948 graduate F. Sherwood Rowland, Ph.D., who earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 for his groundbreaking work linking chlorofluorocarbons with the depletion of stratospheric ozone.
Ohio Wesleyan honored Rowland with its Distinguished Achievement Citation in 1981. According to the OWU citation: “The world owes Dr. Rowland its gratitude not only for his discovery of the ecological ‘time bomb,’ but also for his persistence in demanding that we take action to protect ourselves. His blend of intellectual curiosity and fortitude stands as an example of the scientific community’s potential to preserve, as well as serve, humankind.”
