Noted Classical Philologist to Lecture Oct. 24 at Ohio Wesleyan
Vassiliki Panoussi, Ph.D.
DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University’s Classics program will host a free presentation by Vassiliki Panoussi, Ph.D., the Robert and Sara Boyd Distinguished Associate Professor of Classics at The College of William and Mary.
Panoussi will discuss “Priapic Weddings: Quartilla’s Rituals in Petronius” when she speaks at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in Room 330 of Slocum Hall, 75 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.
She is the author of the 2009 book “Greek Tragedy in Vergil’s Aeneid: Ritual, Empire, and Intertext” and currently is working on a book-length study to be titled “Brides, Mourners, Bacchae: Women’s Rituals in Roman Literature.”
Panoussi also has published scholarly articles on Catullus’ epithalamia (wedding lyrics), Cicero’s “Pro Archia,” and Vergil’s “Aeneid.”
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Classical Philology from the University of Athens in Athens, Greece, and a doctorate in Classics from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
