The Ohio Wesleyan Marketing Group (OMG) has created a guerilla marketing project to help support Matt’s Famous Kabobs, a local restaurant owned and operated by Matt Moustofi.

The restaurant, 18 S. Sandusky St., offers a menu that features gyros, Greek salads, sandwiches, soups, desserts, and, of course, kabobs. His secret recipe cucumber sauce helps to make one-time customers into regulars, but still he needed ideas to bring more people through the doors.

In response, Moomal Shaikh ’13 of Pakistan and Shane Wepprich ’12 of Chillicothe, Ohio, from OMG volunteered their time to help Matt’s Famous Kabobs create a marketing strategy to pull in more customers and increase revenue. They met with Moustofi along with Patricio Plazolles, program officer for Ohio Wesleyan’s Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship.

“The community recognizes that we have very capable students, and trusts that we’ll provide effective alternatives and solutions,” says Plazolles.

Plazolles then brought in Kevin Hammond, a business consultant with the Delaware County Small Business Development Center at the Delaware Area Chamber of Commerce. The five discussed overall goals of the project and built a personal relationship with Moustofi.

After a careful analysis of the restaurant, the OMG developed and presented its recommendations to make Matt’s Famous Kabobs even more famous.

The objectives were to create inexpensive, low-cost, and high-return marketing ideas that would be simple and easy for Moustofi to implement. Ideas included customer loyalty cards, pre-ordering promotions, social media advertising, and general comment cards on how to improve customer satisfaction. The campaign will start at the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year.

“They have worked very hard to make it happen, but we are not successful until we see the results of their contributions,” Plazolles says. “That is to come next semester once the whole project will be implemented.”

The Ohio Wesleyan Marketing Group is a group of students with the common interest of expanding their knowledge and application of the field of marketing. Each year the group selects various projects to provide free marketing consulting and create marketing campaigns. The OMG has worked with numerous departments including OWU’s Career Services and WCSA (student government).
