Ohio Wesleyan Hosts Free One-Woman Show in Spanish Feb. 22

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University's Department of World Languages and Cultures invites everyone to a free, one-woman, cabaret-style play, "Historias amorosas no tan ejemplares (Love Stories Not So Exemplary)," exploring stories of love and horror.

The play, performed in Spanish, stars Mexican actress, producer, and theater educator Paola Izquierdo and is based on the novels of 17th-Century writer María de Zayas y Sotomayor.  Izquierdo will perform at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in Jemison Auditorium inside Ohio Wesleyan's Sanborn Hall, 25 Elizabeth St., Delaware.

Izquierdo is a graduate of Escuela Nacional de Arte Teatral in Mexico City, a recipient of the La Dama de la Victoria medal and two Metropolitan Theater Awards, and has participated in the Mexico-New York Artistic Residencies Program.

She currently is developing "La historia de la Teatra: A Project for the Dissemination of Female Playwriting from the Spanish Golden Age," which includes historical videos, readings, and stage productions. Her work highlights her commitment to the promotion and preservation of Spanish Golden Age theater and the cultural contributions of women throughout history.

Izquierdo's Ohio Wesleyan performance will be introduced by Erin Cowling, Ph.D., of MacEwan University and Lorena Rojas of Western University, both based in Canada. It will be followed by a roundtable conversation, moderated by Natalia Soracipa of the University of Calgary.

"Historias amorosas no tan ejemplares" is presented in collaboration with Ohio Wesleyan students enrolled in the "Women and Power in Early Modern Spain" course taught by Glenda Nieto-Cuebas, Ph.D., who organized the event.

The performance is funded by an OWU Connection grant and presented in collaboration with the Siglo Latinx project, which involves the study of 21st century adaptations of Spanish Golden Age comedias.
