Former Black Panther ‘Mama C’ to Speak March 19 at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University will host a presentation March 19 by Charlotte “Mama C” O’Neal, a former Black Panther living in Tanzania. She and her husband, Pete O’Neal, are featured in the award-winning PBS documentary, “A Panther in Africa.”
Charlotte O’Neal will speak at 7 p.m. March 19 in Ohio Wesleyan’s Bayley Room, located on the second floor of Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The event is free and open to the public.
O’Neal, an accomplished poet, musician, and visual artist, and her husband, founded the United African Alliance Community Center in Arusha, Tanzania, to promote community development in rural Africa. They also operate the Leaders of Tomorrow Children’s Home. The PBS documentary, part of the media outlet’s “Global Voices” programming, shares how the couples’ past as Black Panthers impact their work among the urban and village youth of East Africa and America.
While on campus, O’Neal, author of “Warrior Woman of Peace,” also will spend time with students discussing her life’s work. Ohio Wesleyan students spend time with the O’Neals when studying abroad as part of the OWU in Tanzania program.
