Feb. 18 Symposium to Examine the Impact of a Tax on Carbon

Free Event Hosted by Ohio Wesleyan’s Woltemade Center and Delaware’s Citizens Climate Lobby

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University’s Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship and Delaware’s chapter of the nonprofit, nonpartisan Citizens Climate Lobby are co-sponsoring a Feb. 18 symposium, “A Tax on Carbon: Would it work for Business, Consumers and the Environment?”

Scott Nystrom

The free program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Benes Room of Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Speakers will be Scott Nystrom from Regional Economic Models Inc. (REMI) and Ian Sheldon of The Ohio State University.

Nystrom, senior economic associate/project manager in REMI’s Washington, D.C., office, is the author of a recent study that examined the impact of a fee on carbon-based fuels if the fee revenue were returned to households.

According to the REMI study, CO2 emissions would be reduced 50 percent below 1990 levels within 20 years. In addition, 2.8 million jobs would be added to the American economy, and the improved air quality would eliminate 230,000 premature deaths.

Ian Sheldon, Ph.D.

Sheldon, Ph.D., is an economist whose research interests involve analyzing international trade and policy. He will discuss the economics of a carbon tax and the legality of border tax adjustments associated with carbon taxes. He will explore how the United States can stay competitive in the global marketplace with a domestic carbon tax in place.

Moderating the program will be Laurie Anderson, Ph.D., professor and chair of Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Botany and Microbiology and chair of the campus Sustainability Task Force. Anderson’s research focuses on global environmental change, and she is active in devising strategies to improve environmental sustainability for the OWU campus and Delaware community.
