DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University will celebrate Community Day on Oct. 6 with several free campus events, including a youth soccer clinic, athletics events, and guided tours of OWU’s newly renovated Stuyvesant Hall residential facility.
The celebration will include members of the 2011 Battling Bishop men’s soccer team receiving their NCAA Division III National Championship rings at halftime of the 7:30 p.m. men’s soccer game. The first 900 fans through the gate will receive free beverage tumblers to commemorate the team’s championship season.
Ohio Wesleyan’s Community Day 2012 will kick off at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day. The complete Community Day schedule includes:
10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Free youth soccer clinic for boys and girls ages 8 to14 who participate in Delaware Youth Athletic Association (DYAA) soccer. The clinic, with training and tips from OWU soccer coaches and players, will be held at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m., and youths must bring completed registration and medical release forms, available from their DYAA coaches. Participants also need to bring their own cleats, soccer ball, shin guards, and water. 10 a.m. to noon – Guided tours of Stuyvesant Hall, 223 W. William St., Delaware, which underwent a 15-month, $14 million donor-funded renovation over the past year. The event will feature brief remarks at 11 a.m. Stuyvesant Hall, which opened in 1931, is Ohio Wesleyan’s oldest residential hall one of 11 campus sites on the National Register of Historic Places. The 74,000-square-foot renovation added energy-efficient heating, cooling, and lighting systems, and restored the building’s iconic bell tower and chimes. 11 a.m. – OWU Field Hockey vs. DePauw, at Selby Stadium, 45 S. Henry St., Delaware. The Battling Bishops have set their sights on North Coast Athletic Conference championship contention and a trip to the NCAC conference tournament. 1:30 p.m. – Delaware Hayes Boys Soccer vs. Thomas Worthington, at Hayes High School, 289 Euclid Ave., Delaware. The Pacers are looking to build on last year’s strong late-season run and to capture the program’s first Ohio Capital Conference title since 2008. 5 p.m. – OWU Women’s Soccer vs. DePauw, at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware. The Battling Bishops, the defending North Coast Athletic Conference tournament champions, are favored to defend their conference title, according to the 2012 NCAC women’s soccer preseason poll. 7:30 p.m. – OWU Men’s Soccer vs. DePauw, at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware. The OWU men’s team is predicted to successfully defend its conference championship under the leadership of coach Jay Martin, the winningest coach in collegiate men’s soccer, all divisions.
