Ohio Wesleyan Student Gets Internships in Data Analysis, Business Intelligence
Name: Bulbul Bhati ’23 Hometown: Delhi, India Major:Computer Science OWU Connection Experience: Fall internship with RxNXT; upcoming spring internship with Rev1 Ventures
Bulbul Bhati ’23 spent fall semester working as a data analyst intern for RxNXT, a New Albany, Ohio-based company that provides software to enable employees and dependents to search for the best available price on any medication.
“My role involved manipulating and analyzing data using python programming language to help drive sales conversations and deliver in-depth analyses on product performances, user engagement, and forecasts,” Bhati said. “I also redesigned the company’s website.”
Her internship was coordinated by Columbus-based Rev1 Ventures and Ohio Wesleyan’s Career Connection Office. Ohio Wesleyan is an Innovation Internship Program partner with Rev1.
During spring semester, Bhati will work as a business intelligence internship at Rev1, which combines capital and strategic services to help startups scale and corporates innovate. Her work will include helping the Rev1 team operate “by managing the company’s portfolio data, processes, and analytics to empower companywide transparency and decision-making.”
“I will be analyzing their data to help drive business decisions,” Bhati said. “I will be working closely with team leaders and key stakeholders, helping to drive the evolution and execution of a BI (business intelligence) roadmap to manage increasing demand for data-driven insights.”
My Favorite Fall Internship Moment
“This was the first time I was working with a startup,” Bhati said. “My favorite moment of this experience was that every time I had to work with their data, the entire team was open to my inputs. I had the liberty of working on an analysis that I found interesting or challenging. Moreover, I was working very closely with the company’s CEO and COO which was another memorable experience.
“Unlike most internships wherein the interns are given specific and easy tasks, in this internship, I had the opportunity to brainstorm ideas and work on challenging tasks whose results were actually used by the company during sales conversations.”
Lessons Learned
“Computer Science is all about critical thinking. We are living in an era where every problem can have a technical explanation. This internship gave me an opportunity to solve real-life problems using technology, which ties back to what we learn in class.
“In the future, I see myself working in the field of Data Science and Machine Learning, and potentially even Artificial Intelligence. All these fields are built on the pillar of data, its processing, and analysis. The skills I picked up from this experience (working with real-world data) have strengthened my base and understanding of the fields I want to pursue in the future.”
The Value of Internships
“Such experiences, especially the ones with startups, really make one think critically and apply skills learned in class. Working in a startup environment requires you to wear many hats at the same time. For example, I was also asked to look at the company’s website and make some changes to it. Not only did I get a chance to work on my data analysis and data science skills, I also learned a lot about other fields in a business, like marketing, sales, and publicity.”
“I want to work in the field of Data Science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence after graduation and later maybe get a master’s degree in the same.”
