Art Smart
Sculptures, pottery, paintings, and other works by 22 Ohio Wesleyan University fine arts students are on display through October 15 in the Werner Student Art Gallery in Edgar Hall.
This gallery is operated independently by the Student Art Guild, which selects the exhibitions from student proposals. The current student show is one of the larger exhibits of the year.
“This year, we are trying to focus on group shows to feature more students and their work,” says gallery director Emma Kropp ’12 of Aurora, Ohio.
The Fine Arts Department offers a gallery management class, but she explains that the “real world” experience comes from the involvement of student-exhibitors in the design, setup, and takedown of their pieces, as well as in planning their artist receptions.
Members of the OWU community and the public are invited to meet the featured student-artists at a reception from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. October 1 at Werner Gallery. Gallery hours for the exhibit are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and by appointment on weekends. The gallery will be open on Homecoming & Family Weekend on Saturday, October 8, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The Werner Student Art Gallery was created in 2001 during the renovation of Edgar Hall. It was funded through a donation from Carl D. Werner in memory of Mary Pontius Werner ’28.
