A Spooktacular Tradition

As Halloween quickly approaches, the brothers of Ohio Wesleyan University’s Chi Phi fraternity are getting ready to host their 27th annual haunted house. The haunted house has been Chi Phi’s philanthropy event since the 1980s, and this year the brothers plan to keep up the tradition in style.
The haunted house is set up with different themed floors. This year the first floor will have a zombie theme, and the basement will be transformed into a maze—a Chi Phi tradition for as long as anyone can remember. Other features of the haunted house will include clowns, a haunted swamp, and a man with a chainsaw who escorts people out at the end of their tour.
The haunted house is advertised to the Delaware area as well as Sunbury and Marysville, so the whole community can be part of the Halloween event. The haunted house raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters and People in Need Inc. Last year it raised more than $4,000.
As current Chi Phi president, Paul Kline, a junior from Essex Junction, Vermont, is excited about this year’s house.
“I can honestly say I enjoy very few things more than seeing the floor come together at the end of a month of planning and building,” he says.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children under 12, or seven food points or $5 for OWU students with ID. People can save $1 off the admission price by donating a canned good item. The Chi Phi fraternity house is located at 216 N. Franklin St. Haunted house hours are 7-10 p.m. October 27 and 7-11:30 p.m. October 28-29.
